There are a wide variety of pests that can cause harm to your trees and shrubs. Our insect control programs can help to treat and prevent this damage. Most of the time, more than one treatment per year is required to control the pests because of the nature of the insects’ yearly life cycle. Below you can learn a little about some of the most common problems we find in landscapes.
In Wadsworth Ohio there are a wide variety of pests that cause great harm to your trees and shrubs but don’t worry, our Wadsworth lawn care team is armed with the right tools to both prevent and eliminate insects before more damage is done.
Usually more than a single treatment per year is required due to the nature of the insects yearly life cycle. We’ll have a certified arborist identify and monitor which insects are problematic and set up a schedule to prevent and/or eliminate these insects in the future.
Below you can learn a little more about some of the most common problems we come across that we can effectively treat.
Emerald Ash Borer:
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been a topic of large concern recently because of the danger to the ash tree population. We have found active EAB throughout our entire service area. University agriculture departments now recommend that all ash trees be treated for the EAB or they will die from the damage within the next few years.
The Emerald Ash Borer attacks ash trees and will kill the tree if not treated. The most notable symptom of its presence is in the “D” shaped exit hole, which can be seen just above the penny in the picture above.
The good news is that we are able to treat and/or prevent the EAB with a yearly systemic soil injection or a semi-annual trunk injection that will protect your ash trees.
Aphids are small insects that feed on the foliage of trees and shrubs. They suck out the juices of the plants. Depending on the species, they can be yellow, white, or black. The damage can be the leaves curling or holes in the leaves. Aphids are found mostly on the underside of the leaves as well as the stems.
Aphids can be treated with a 2 spray program or 1 year-long lasting soil injection.
Borers are a type of insect that literally “bore” into the trunks and limbs of trees and shrubs. The damage can be diagnosed on the affected tree by seeing the “exit holes” on the trunk. These are holes caused by where the adult borers bore their way out of the trunk of the tree.
Borers are treated with a series of 2 sprays. Left untreated, borers will kill a tree.
Japanese Beetles are the adult form of the grubs that are found in and damage lawns. These adult beetles attack the foliage of the trees and shrubs and can cause severe damage to the leaves.
We very effectively control Japanese beetles with a once per year spray on your affected trees and/or shrubs.
Spider mites are a very common plant pest that can affect a variety of trees and shrubs, most notably spruces. The damage causes the plant or tree to turn a rust color. Spider mites are very small and are barely able to be seen with the naked eye.
Mites can be controlled with a 2 spray per year program. Left untreated they can cause severe damage, like in the picture, or cause death to the affected tree or plant.
If you have insects that are a problem, don’t hesitate to contact the Wadsworth lawn care division of Custom Spray so we can set up a plan to treat these insects before they cause anymore damage.
